KSDA BAND 2009 TOUR

The following report was submitted by music teacher and band leader, Mr. Doug Spencer.

“Our first performance was at the Northwest Christian School in Puyallup where the band played a variety of secular and sacred selections. An enthusiastic audience participated by conducting the band as we played “Sousa, The March King”, and playing rhythm instruments to the selection of “Under the Sea”.

We traveled to our Washington State Capitol in Olympia where we divided into two groups. One group received a guided tour of the Washington State Governor’s Mansion, while the other group received a guided tour of the Legislative Building with visits to the Rotunda, House, and the Senate while both were in session. Our two groups then exchanged tours for an enjoyable and educational experience of where our governor lives and historical information about the construction of the Capitol, and how our state government functions."

"We traveled to the Kitsap Peninsula with swimming and an overnight stay at the Kitsap Adventist School. We performed a morning concert for a very appreciative audience at the school before departing for the Naval Undersea Museum near Poulsbo. As we walked into the museum we were surrounded by the sights, sounds, and artifacts that opened the undersea world to us.
We were met by a Docent who talked with the students about the various aspects of the museum and what to expect as they explored the exhibits on a one hour scavenger hunt to discover some unique treasurers of wisdom. At the conclusion of the scavenger hunt, the students returned to the lobby where the docent collected their scavenger sheets and passed out a little prize for completion. The docent gave an interesting demonstration on how the alarm sirens worked in the submarines of World War II.
The students also visited outdoor exhibits of the submarines on display in addition to various technologies displayed inside on submarines, torpedoes and the ocean environment. They learned about our Navy’s heritage and operations, and gained a better understanding of science in the depths of the world’s oceans."

"Our next destination was on the north end of the Olympic Peninsula, near Sequim, for lunch, swimming, and a trip to the Dungeness Spit Park. The students were able to hike, roam the beach, and see how far they could throw rocks into the water and of course get wet. The weather was very cooperative and we had a good time.
"We returned to the Sequim SDA Church fellowship hall for dinner and a concert for the members of the Sequim Church and School. We again encouraged audience participation and the KSDA Band performed with excellence. All the students had an opportunity to receive an informative talk from the director of Project Patch and were given a pen light as a memento. A fun evening was concluded with social time and bed.
"The climax of our trip was going to the Olympic Game Farm where the students got an up-close and in-your-face experience with wild animals in captivity at the game farm. They learn about the habits and lifestyle of the resident tiger, lion, bear, deer, lynx, coyote, rhinoceros, elk, zebra, and many more as our guide walked the group through the caged area. Disney movies had been filmed here in the past as well as movies about wildlife by the State Department of Wildlife.
"Then, the fun began as we caravanned through the open acreage in our vehicles.  As the animals roamed near the road many of them stuck their heads through the open windows to greet the vehicle passengers and get a snack. We had lots of laughs, pictures, and fun. Then it was off to catch the Bainbridge/Seattle Ferry back to the mainland for lunch at the Spaghetti Factory on the Seattle waterfront before heading back to school.

"The trip will be memorable for the good
times we had, the talents we shared with others, hanging out with our classmates, and enjoying a great band tour. I would like to especially thank the parents who joined us for helping with supervision and transportation, and Leif Andersen and Rick Serns for their assistance."
