Fifth Grade Curriculum
As KSDA students, we are here to honor Christ, to become like Him, to work for Him.
The fifth grade program strives to provide a strong foundation in the training of a child mentally, physically, and spiritually. The program provides a strong foundation in the academics of math, Bible, science, language arts, and social studies. The curriculum is taught using a combination of textbooks, age-appropriate readings, discussion groups, peer coaching, technology, and projects. To enhance our overall program the fifth graders are involved in weekly physical education classes, computer lab, band classes, community outreach, field trips, and an optional ski program in February.
All KSDA students meet in the gym each Friday morning to sing and worship together. We have a fall and spring Week of Prayer.
SCIENCE--The science units are creation based and deal with Earth's Structure; The Human Body structure and care; and Electricity and Magnetism. (A Healthy Lifestyle is a school emphasis for this year.) Science lab, projects, and field trips are a part of the science program.
SOCIAL STUDIES—Social Studies will be integrated with writing, vocabulary, and reading. Besides geography skills, we will be studying God’s involvement in the development of the United States as a nation through the ravages of the Civil War. In addition, we will be learning life skills and character building.
READING--The fifth grade reading program will include theme books we study as a class and individualized leveled books with activities in small groups. Students will have discussions, activities, and questions as they read each book. Students will also be required additional reading in a variety of subject matters. We also use Accelerated Reader as part of our reading program. This is a computer base testing program Student's read library books and then take a short comprehension quiz on the computer. Some of the theme book titles are: Amos Fortune, Free Man; Lewis and Clark : Opening the American West; A Family Apart; Volcano: The Eruption and healing of Mount St. Helens; and Esperanza Rising.
LANGUAGE ARTS—Grammar and writing skills will be stressed using the textbook, Daily Oral Writing (D.O.L.), and the syllabus for “Excellence in Writing”. Spelling and Vocabulary will be taught in conjunction with the Reading program using words from our reading, science, and social studies topics. Language arts will be integrated throughout the core curriculum.
