First and Second Grade Curriculum
We are here to honor Christ, to become like Him, to work for Him

First grade is the first big step that a child makes into their education. First grade at Kirkland SDA School provides the opportunity to take that step and grow physically, academically, emotionally and spiritually. Second grade is building and extending the big step of first grade.

Students have the chance to grow spiritually through daily morning worships. Every day, students learn from the Bible and devotions are read. Each Friday students meet with KSDA classes to worship together.

Reading and Language Arts – Reading is such an important and wonderful part of the learning process. First grade is where this skill has the most potential and opportunity to flourish. Second grade is where these skills are added to and polished. Phonics and whole language strategies are implemented to teach students to become self sufficient, expert readers. A traditional approach to teaching spelling is combined with curriculum from Everyday Spelling in the classroom.  We are continuing to implement the newest reading program this year, Pathways. In this program the students will participate in reading groups where they are learning on their individual level. There will be many books for the students to hear and read. This curriculum also incorporates Bible, Handwriting, Science and Social Studies.

Science – The Science curriculum is taught using themes. This year we will be following the Second grade key learnings found on the Washington Conference website. The themes covered will be geology, magnetism, health and the human body. The themes will be taught while providing a fun and interactive hands-on experience for each student. The curriculum covers life, earth and physical science.

Social Studies – Important people and events are covered and integrated into reading and science. Holidays, Geography and key historical figures are taught and studied.

Bible – The Bible curriculum moves through the Bible while focusing on “Following His Way.” Each Bible story and character is applied to what an awesome God we love and serve and his plan to save us so we can be in heaven with him.

Math – The primary team is starting our second year with the Math program from Saxon. This program has Calendar, guided practice and usually daily homework built into it. The program has more practice so the students can be more confident about their math skills. The math curriculum will also include supplemental problem solving and addition and subtraction drills.

Music -  The music curriculum this year will include learning recorders, and studying "Peter and the Wolf".

Art -  The art curriculum follows the Arts Attack program that incorporates line, shape, form and many other art ideas.
