Our History

The Kirkland Seventh-day Adventist School has a long and rich history.  Classes began in the fall of 1945 with Mrs. LaGride teaching 11 students in the old Grange Hall on 116th Street in Kirkland.  The following year the school was moved to the church site and classes met in the attic and later in the basement.  Over the next five years the school continued to grow and employed seven different teachers.

Mark Olcott

In the spring of 1950 Mark and Ardella Olcott, fresh from college, accepted the call from the Educational Superintendent, Elder Jewett, to teach at KSDA.  The school year began with 23 students.

In the fall of 1953 negotiations began with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare for a part of the old Stewart Heights Housing Development.  After two years of negotiations and the personal involvement of Representative Tom Pelly and Senator “Scoop” Jackson, the school was awarded the commercial building and 4 ½ acres of land for $3,800.

By the fall of 1957 the south part of the building was refurbished and ready for occupancy.  The 9th and 10th grades were added and the school year began with 70 students.

Dallas Carr
Between 1970 and 1974 the gym and more classrooms were added to accommodate a growing student population.  Enrollment increased and by the mid-seventies it reached an all time high of 280 students.
In 1982, after 32 years of service to KSDA, Mark Olcott retired.  Dallas Carr became principal for the next two school years, followed by Dan Brooks who served as principal until the spring of 1986.

In 1976 Doug White joined the faculty to teach Math, Bible, and Science.  He stepped into the principal position in 1986 and continued to teach Math and Biology until 1997 when Puget Sound Adventist Academy was formed.  White then became principal of both schools - a position he held until 2008.

Doug made many contributions to the school while he was principal.  His impact on the lives of his students will long be remembered for the many mission trips, field trips, programs and games in which he played a key role.

Rick Serns
Dr. Rick Serns served as principal at KSDA and PSAA during the 2009/2009 school year, after twenty years as principal and teacher in various Adventist schools.  Dr. Serns coached the mens' basketball team, participated with IMPACT and accompanied the students on the mission trip to Mexico.

In 1995 Kirkland Seventh-day Adventist School celebrated its 50th anniversary.  Today it continues to offer quality Christian education and the focus remains the same:  We are here to honor Christ, become like Him and to work for Him.
